Very often, the words sensuous, sensual and erotic are used interchangeably. So it is important that we define these terms for our reference.
The word sensuous has to do with the five senses.
Sensuousnous in an art form is one that appeals to all the five senses and makes it a satisfying experience of life.
The sensual is a word that adds one more element to the term sensuousness which is the sexual element.
The balance of sensuous and sensual is tipped towards sexuality in the term erotic.
For example, the sensuous person will experience a flower with all his five senses and enjoy it at all those levels.
Another individual's sensual experience might remind him of the flower as something that adorns his beloved's hair or the scene of their lovemaking.
Erotica has to do almost entirely with sexuality.
The sculptures of Khajuraho are erotic.
The female figures in Mamallapuram are sensuous bordering on the sensual, but never erotic.
There is intellectual coyness attached to these terms. Indian culture has never shunned sexuality as an undesirable facet of life. Traditionally the Indian has wholly accepted the sensuous, sensual and the erotic in life without any hint of moral censure.
This is why even a sacred sculpture treats sensuality and erotica in an explicit manner.
There is nothing hidden or secret about it although it is entirely private and personal.
Given a particular lyric/dance form/dance style/text the question of the degree of sensuality in the performance is relevant.
Does this depend on the individual dancer/dance style/guru and ofcourse, audience acceptability?
And if so, to what degree?
We have very distinguished and knowledgeable speakers who are also highly respected practioners and scholars of the arts who will present their views and their art on the 22, 23, 24 of Dec 2007 in the conference titled "Sensuality in Indian Dance".
